Australia has finally announced that the borders will be reopened next year as part of the budget plan in order to bring back all the migrants and help accelerate the economic recovery process. The decision has finally been revealed amidst the fears prevalent due to the current situation with respect to which the federal government fears that the development and economic growth cannot be sustained for long in the country if the international travellers will be kept away from travelling to Australia and also if the citizens will be kept locked in their homes.

In an important warning made against the closed international borders, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told the media that he completely believes in restoring the migration levels that were planned before the pandemic situation as they are waiting for an approval from the federal government’s health experts to convey the possibility of the same to be implemented.

Mr. Josh Frydenberg also said that for the time being, the plans to recover the economy are in process from the assistance of all those Australians who cannot leave the country. Although, this step is adding to the overall spending of the Government of Australia but is only a temporary way out.

He further confirmed that the above measure adopted is not permanent and has been implemented due to the effect of the pandemic.

The federal government’s budget, to be delivered by the treasurer Mr. Josh Frydenberg on the Tuesday of this week, will necessarily include the relevant assumptions for the vaccinations of the coronavirus and also the infections in order to aim for the reopening of the Australian borders in the year 2022, which has been finalized several months after the projection has been made in the federal budget that was announced seven months ago.

The borders will be reopened when it will be all safe to do so and as soon as they will be reopened, the overall international migration from the foreign countries will also increase, which would include the skilled and the professional workers, as told by Mr. Frydenberg to the local newspapers, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

The ministers have acknowledged that the skilled workers play a very crucial role in the upliftment of the economy but the government has put a wait period as they do not want to compromise with the public safety and also with the process of economic recovery by ignoring the advice of the medical professionals.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also rejected the ideology which was getting published in the media under the phrase of “fortress Australia” and has corrected these reports by stating that the government wants the borders to remain closed in order to completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19.

He further added that the COVID suppression strategy of the Australian Government has not been changes to a complete elimination strategy nor achieving zero cases is our goal as there will always be some cases re-appearing as residents of Australia will continue to return back to their home country. The international borders will however be open again when it will be safe to do so.

Further, Mr. Josh Frydenberg also said that he also want to restore the levels of migrations as were planned before the pandemic arrived, which was equivalent to approximately 240,000 in the year 2018-19, according to the figures reported in the federal budget in last October..

He gave hope that the government will reach to these thresholds over time. He agreed that the total foreign migration has greatly been impacted due to the pandemic crisis. The government is in a full support of a generous and sustainable immigration program that implies the best of what the Australians are, that is, an open and diverse country.

Anthony Albanese, Labor Leader of the Government of Australia has also said last week that the closed international borders had significantly highlighted the nation’s reliance on temporary immigrant workers and also the need of investing in the training of the Australia in many required skilled to fill the gap of the skill shortages.

Labor home affairs spokeswomen Ms. Keneally has although highlighted this requirement one year ago for an even greater priority to be given towards the hiring of the unemployed Australians over the return of the migration levels of the past years. She did not agree with the idea of the fellow ministers encouraging the return of the migrants to Australia for work in the same numbers and composition after the pandemic.

Former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration Abul Rizvi said that an important indicator to check the government immigration level plans for the upcoming years would be whether the budget included an increment in the migration programs that were laid down to reach the forecasted numbers set out in the statement for the population last December.

The statement confirmed that the total overseas migration has the possibility to decrease from 154,000 individuals in the year 2019-20 to approximately 72,000 individuals in the year 2020-21, which are in themselves some contradictory figures.

Immigration has been time and again identified as an important component of the economic and health recovery of the Australia from the effects of COVID-19.

Deloitte Access Economics expects that the overall migration will reach to 20,000 in the financial year 2022 and also will increase strongly to 175,000 in the following year.

Economists have strong belief that the federal budget will be required to include an increase in the overall migration to support the predictions for employment opportunities, growth and management of the Commonwealth Debt.

Gabriel D’Souza, a senior economist at the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia also put forth her insights on the matter and has said that the Australian Government might be able to run its economy without migration for few years but immigration is fundamental to the Australia’s overall growth.

She added that the forecasts made in the budget will be too optimistic if the required measure to enhance the arrival of the migrants from the overseas will not be included in the same, and the possible ways could be to use quarantine to expand the numbers of skilled and professional workers and also the family intake.

There will be a complete section of the Australian economy that will not do well without the migration. This includes education, tourism and hospitality and without overseas migration a considerable number of business sectors will be impacted, she further added in her comments. She struggled to imagine achieving high growth levels without migration.

Mr. Josh Frydenberg also acknowledged the fact that the closure of the international borders has increased the overall demand of the consumers in various ways, such as forcing the citizens and permanent resident of the Australia to spend their fiscal investments while being locked at home, which is not a sustainable way going forward.

Employers are constantly warning the government about the shortage of the workers which includes skilled professionals such as software programmers, chefs and veterinarians, and have told the government that the imposed restrictions have further made it harder for the businesses to hire the local workers.

Innes Willox, the Australian Industry Group Chief has demanded for more budget allocation towards the local apprentices and also the requirement of easier rules to bring back the skilled migrants in Australia. He told the media that the federal budget should give ample priority to the education, training and support this development in the country by introducing the measures that will help open the opportunities for the temporary and permanent migrants in Australia.
