Saskatchewan's government has established a new pilot programme under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) to address the province's hard-to-fill positions.
The Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot will allow Saskatchewan firms to recruit individuals for chosen positions that have considerable recruitment issues through abroad missions or other international recruitment initiatives. The employment that is qualified for this pilot will allow for the application of low and entry-level positions and may require on-the-job training, but they are necessary for businesses to continue to operate and expand. Health, manufacturing, agriculture, ag-tech, construction, hospitality, and retail are among the industries with the highest labour demand.
"With the large economic initiatives just announced in Saskatchewan, the demand for labour in our province is great, and it's only going to get stronger," Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "This new Hard-To-Fill Skills Pilot, which was developed in Saskatchewan for Saskatchewan, is a step forward in our autonomy talks with the federal government and will enable firms to have more international alternatives for recruiting people. This is on top of record spending in training and upskilling our provincial workforce as we emerge from the worldwide pandemic into a period of solid growth."
Employers and the community would assist workers nominated through this stream, boosting their chances of success. In December 2021, the pilot will begin.
"This is brilliant news for Saskatchewan's hotel industry," said Jim Bence, President and CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan. "This pilot initiative is intended to attract talent and is a terrific programme for all industries in the province that are currently suffering labour shortages. While we strive to recruit locally wherever possible, we must be innovative to guarantee we have the necessary labour supply to assist our businesses and communities grow and develop in Saskatchewan, something this one-of-a-kind initiative will be especially beneficial with post-COVID."
Applicants to the Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot must meet the following requirements in order to be considered:
• Have a full-time, permanent offer of work from a registered Saskatchewan employer, as well as a SINP job approval letter for an approved occupation;
• Meet a sufficient level of competence in a Canadian Official Language; and
• Meet the necessary educational and work experience criteria, which include at least one year of experience in the same occupation as the job offer or six months in that position in Saskatchewan.
Prior to using the pilot programme for recruiting, employers must demonstrate that they have made considerable attempts to hire domestically, establish the necessity and benefit for their firm, and meet conditions relating to providing settlement support for the employees.
