The World Health Organization categorised B.1.1.529 as an Omicron variant of concern on November 26, 2021. Since then, it has been discovered in a variety of nations and areas, notably in Canada, where it has been confirmed in numerous travel-related cases.
That is why, today, the Ministers of Health, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, and of Public Safety, the Honourable Marco Mendicino, announced additional border measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and its variants being imported and transmitted into Canada as a result of international travel.
The Government of Canada is increasing the list of countries with entrance bans published on November 26, 2021, to add Egypt, Nigeria, and Malawi, based on findings from continuing monitoring activities and the most recent public health advice. Foreign citizens who have spent the past 14 days in any of the following countries may be denied admission into Canada beginning tomorrow:
• Botswana
• Egypt
• Eswatini
• Lesotho
• Malawi
• Mozambique
• Namibia
• Nigeria
• South Africa
• Zimbabwe
Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and people with Indian Act status who have been in any of these ten countries in the previous 14 days, regardless of vaccination status or a previous history of testing positive for COVID-19, will be subject to enhanced pre-entry and arrival testing, screening, and quarantine measures.
Border testing surveillance will be changed in the future based on the most recent available evidence to further limit the danger of this variation being imported. All fully vaccinated travellers arriving by plane from destinations other than the United States will be subjected to arrival testing in the coming days. Travelers who are fully vaccinated will be needed to quarantine while waiting for the results of their arrival test.
Unvaccinated visitors who have a right of entrance to Canada will be tested on arrival and on day 8, and will be quarantined for 14 days. Those coming by air, on the other hand, will now be obliged to remain in a designated quarantine facility or another suitable place while awaiting the results of their on-arrival test.
The Canadian government will continue to examine the situation as it develops, monitor case statistics, and alter border restrictions as necessary. The federal government is cooperating with its provincial and territorial equivalents. While the impact of all variations is still being assessed in Canada, vaccination, in conjunction with public health and individual efforts, is helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.
