The update regarding the reopening of the Australian borders for the skilled workers as well as for the international students has finally come after a two-week extended pause due to the health and travel-related concerns associated with the Omicron Covid-19 variant

The visa holders that are newly arrived expressed that they are feeling excited to finally land in Australia, after waiting for almost 2 years since the international borders got closed during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic across the world.

As of December 14, 2021, only fully vaccinated international students and skilled workers are permitted to arrive in Australia without requiring a travel exemption. This recent update has come after the federal government announced a two-week pause on the travel of visa holders as the concerns over the arrival of the Omicron variant surfaced in the month of December.

Reflecting upon the case scenarios, Zadly Flores waited for a period of two years to finally begin studying master’s program in Australia. Both, he and his spouse said that they are elated to have finally landed in Australia from Singapore recently. He further added that it was really disheartening when the quarantine was extended for a considerable period of time due to the pandemic situation but they are happy to have at last arrived in Australia and are looking forward to getting into education and also adapting themselves to the Australian life and culture. He also motivated the international students who are yet to arrive in Australia for their studies and are waiting in their respective countries to not lose hope and keep praying as they will soon land in Australia to experience Australian life.

Yet another case in which Ankit Pokhrel completed his undergraduate studies in Australia while he enrolled for the same on a student visa two years ago, however, he flew out of the country to celebrate his graduation and got caught up in the travel restrictions imposed by Australia as the pandemic started all across the world. He said that he tried reaching Australia several times and applied for travel exemption but it did not seem to happen for him but now he was fortunate to return back to Australia on a skilled immigrant visa and reported that he is looking forward to working in Australia and contribute towards the Australian economy.

Software Engineer, Aravind Parchura arrived from India to Australia during this week when only one month is left on his existing visa. As he waited for almost two years to re-enter Australia, he has high hopes to extend his visa now. He said that he was waiting in his home country because all the flights to Australia were banned and also due to the Covid related restrictions, which cost almost 2 years on his career. However, as he has finally landed in Australia now, he has completed his quarantines, has got tested, and looking forward to resuming work.

The Australian government has estimated that around 2,35,000 visa holders will now become eligible to enter into the country which also includes an approximate 1,33,000 international students to return back to Australia. The Chief Executive of Australian Universities, Catriona Jackson also gave the statement saying that she is delighted that the international students can also now return back to Australia and resume their further studies. She said that they completely recognise the impact made by Covid-19 on the overall personal and professional growth and acknowledged the resilience exhibited by the international students during times of extreme uncertainty.

The travel bubble with Japan and South Korea has also resumed as well as Tasmania has also reopened their borders for the vaccinated travellers from the rest part of Australia, on this Wednesday.

People that are entering Tasmania from other plausible high-risk areas should return back with a negative Covid-19 test report that must have been taken in the 72-hours of prior duration of their arrival. Unvaccinated people will still be required to apply for the travel exemption in order to enter into the country.

The virus-related travel restrictions are also now been relaxed comparatively in the state of NSW, where the unvaccinated people will now be able to access the retail and hospitality venues. NSW also made the official announcement on this Tuesday that fully vaccinated travellers arriving from the eight South African countries would no longer be required to complete 14 days of quarantine, thereby adhering to similar requirements all across for all the international travellers.

Therefore, starting from December 15, 2021, international skilled workers and student visa holders as well as humanitarians, along with provisional family visa holders will be having access to the Australian borders again.
