Due to the effects of the Covid pandemic, record-high job openings coincide with increased total employment and lower unemployment.
Ottawa, December 21
According to government data, the number of job openings in Canada reached a new high of 912,600 in the third quarter of 2021.
Due to the effects of the Covid pandemic, record-high job openings coincided with rise in total employment and declining unemployment, according to Statistics Canada, as reported by the Xinhua news agency on Monday.
The statistics from Statistics Canada provide insight on some of the components that go into the monthly job vacancy data, such as sectoral and regional variations in unmet labour demand, changes in the occupation and skills profile of postings, and recent wage trends.
Across all sectors, the total number of job vacancies was 349,700 more than that in the corresponding period of 2019.
In the third quarter of 2021, employment openings in all provinces of Canada increased as compared to the same time two years prior.
In 18 of the 20 major industrial sectors, job openings grew between the third quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2021.
Only agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting, as well as real estate and rental and leasing, had a decrease in vacancies in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same time two years prior.
The surge in job openings was driven by five industries: health care, construction, lodging and food, retail commerce, and manufacturing.
Increases in job openings can indicate a variety of changes in labour market conditions across industries and geographies.
Between the third quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2021, vacancies in low-wage jobs grew more than in high-wage occupations.
In the third quarter of 2019, 20% of occupations with the lowest average pay employed 35% of the workforce and had 48.9% of job openings.
These same occupations contributed for 32.3 percent of workers and 50.9 percent of openings in the third quarter of 2021.
In the third quarter of 2021, the 20% of jobs with the highest average pay accounted for 9.4% of openings, down 1.1 percentage points from the same time two years prior.
