In an effort to cover a record number of employment openings created by the Covid-19 outbreak, Australia's government will provide visa rebates to students and backpackers who wish to visit the nation.
Visitors entering Australia on a student or working holiday visa will get a refund on their application cost, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Morrison expressed his optimism that the newcomers will be able to help fill some of Australia's "critical workforce shortages," notably in the hospitality and agriculture industries.
Mr. Morrison said he was encouraging overseas students to return for the start of the academic year as a "thank you for choosing Australia."
“My message to them is ‘Come on down. Come on down now,’” Morrison remarked at a news conference in Canberra on Wednesday.
Following a large outbreak of the omicron Covid-19 type, Australia's economy has been under growing strain in recent months. As a result of being forced to isolate after contracting the illness, supply shortages have erupted across the country, leaving some store shelves bare. A number of food and logistics companies reported that between 10% and 50% of their staff were absent on any given day.
Morrison did not specify how the rebate would operate, but he did say that it would be effective for the following eight weeks for students and twelve weeks for working holiday visa holders. The scheme is expected to cost AU$55 million (US$39.5 million), with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg estimating that up to 175,000 individuals will apply.
Prior to the latest Covid-19 outbreak, employment openings in Australia reached a new high, rising 18.5 percent to over 400,000 in the three months leading up to November. After rising for the previous two months, the jobless rate fell to 4.6 percent in November.
In an opinion article sent by his office on Wednesday, opposition Labor leader Anthony Albanese claimed Australia was "over-reliant on international labor." If the economy is to truly recover from the epidemic, Albanese believes the Morrison government must address a skills gap.
Tourism Australia will get $3 million from the government for a marketing campaign aimed at backpackers and students.
"The long-term solution," he continued, "is to train more Australians to satisfy our own labor demands." "It's incredible that we have a skills deficit at a time when two million Australians are unemployed or underemployed."
In comparison to other western nations, Morrison said Australia was still well-positioned in terms of its Covid-19 response, with high immunization rates and a low number of deaths. He said, "The crest of this omicron wave is either upon us now or will come upon us in states over the next two weeks."
