Andrew Giles, the current immigration minister of Australia, has criticized the previous Morrison administration for ignoring immigration duties. Additionally, he stated during the FECCA 2022 conference that the incoming administration is striving to reduce the waiting period for parent visas.
Andrew Giles, the recently sworn-in Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, delivered his first address at the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia (FECCA) Conference in Melbourne on 16 June.
In an exclusive interview with SBS Hindi, Minister Giles stated unequivocally that the incoming administration was intent on resolving the present immigration backlog.
"An absolute priority for me is addressing the neglect and congestion of the visa system and citizenship processes that has resulted from the Liberal government's lengthy period of disregard of our nation's immigration functions," he added.
"PM Albanese and I are focused on clearing the backlog first, and I have been in frequent contact with departments and authorities to ensure that this is a top priority.
"And I believe it's impossible to exaggerate the significance of this, given that so many individuals have been separated for so long due to the epidemic. These personal relationships must be rebuilt, said Mr. Giles.
The minister also discussed the waiting time for persons seeking Australian citizenship.
"And finally, too many Australians have waited too long to become citizens. "This is another issue that must be addressed," he stated.
The minister stated, after describing Australian citizenship as a mix of a lengthy journey, a significant and often beautiful event in people's life, that it is inexcusable that too many individuals have waited for years.
In response to a question on the permanent residence of skilled temporary workers, Mr. Giles stated, "what I am worried about is ensuring that we rebalance our immigration system to give greater precedence to permanent types of migration."
Mr. Giles reaffirmed that the new administration was dedicated to working on parent visas. The Indian-Australian community has held this matter in the highest regard.
He stated, "This is a very serious subject for many individuals, including many in my electorate."
He represents the Scullin Electoral Division, which includes the northern Melbourne suburbs of Epping, Thomastown, Bundoora, Lalor, Mill Park, and South Morang, all of which are home to a sizable Indian-origin community.
Minister Giles elaborated on the backlog of citizenship applications, stating, "It's something we're working on in depth because it's a difficult subject that demands a strategy that involves extensive engagement with communities and design work in ministries."
Mr. Giles, praising the importance of the FECCA 2022 conference, stated that the Labor administration will "work toward a country where everyone truly belongs, where everyone is appreciated, respected, and proud of who they are."
Among the other speakers at the conference's opening and plenary sessions was former immigration minister Dan Tehan. Formerly a part of the Morrison administration, Mr. Tehan is currently the Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.
Mr. Tehan told SBS Hindi that the present visa backlog was a result of the epidemic and that "the incoming administration needs to move swiftly to remedy the issue"
Mr. Tehan stated that one of the government's responsibilities was to eliminate the backlog, and that extra resources had been allocated to ensure that this would occur.
FECCA and the Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria are co-hosting the two-day event (ECCV). Diverse ethnic leaders, delegates, young and fresh voices, and scholars have gathered for this year's conference, whose subject is "Advancing Multicultural Australia."
Over a hundred speakers will talk on a variety of important topics, including racism, elder care reform, disability, identity, and diversity.
Governor-General of Australia David Hurley also attended the conference and delivered the opening speech.
Mr. Hurley told SBS Hindi, "I'm here to encourage the leaders of the ethnic communities represented here to consider nominating individuals for recognition under the Order of Australia. We must enhance the number of nominations submitted and the variety reflected in the Order."
Senator Adam Bandt, leader of the Greens, was also spotted at the conference.
