Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released invitations to apply (ITAs) in the latest Express Entry draw, specifically targeting candidates with Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations. A total of 1,613 ITAs were issued, with applicants needing a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 743 to qualify.

The most recent draw before today took place on September 19, inviting 4,000 candidates exclusively from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). These candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 509, slightly higher than the previous CEC draw on August 27, which had a cutoff of 507.

CEC-specific draws have become more frequent over the summer, with IRCC issuing 21,800 ITAs to CEC candidates since July. This aligns with IRCC's strategy to increase "domestic" draws and reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada PR Processing Time, supporting the department’s efforts to meet its annual permanent resident targets.

Today’s draw is the first of the month. Last year, IRCC held four draws in October, issuing a total of 9,173 invitations.

What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry, launched in 2015, is an application management system designed to help IRCC select economic immigration candidates who can address critical labor shortages.

It manages three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Applicants are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which assesses key human capital factors such as work experience, age, language proficiency, education, and occupation. Additional points can be awarded for factors like immigrating with a spouse or partner, having a sibling in Canada, or possessing Canadian work experience or education.

Category-Based Selection

CRS scores are generally lower in category-based selection draws, a type of draw introduced by IRCC in May 2023 to target Express Entry candidates who can address specific workforce or demographic needs. The department has six categories for these draws:

  • Healthcare
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • French language proficiency

These categories were chosen after extensive consultations with various stakeholders. An assessment of labor market needs. And IRCC’s goal to admit 6% of newcomers into French-speaking minority communities outside Quebec.

Although CRS cut-off scores for these draws are typically lower than in program-specific or general draws. Candidates still need an active Express Entry profile, and a high CRS score remains an advantage.
