To promote manufacturing, research, and technology, more skilled permanent immigrants must be allowed to enter the country, according to the innovation spokeswoman for Labor.

Clare O'Neil, a Labor front-bencher, has called for significant immigration reforms as part of a comprehensive revision of Australia's post-pandemic path.

Wednesday, the innovation, technology, and future of work spokeswoman for the opposition discussed economics, global affairs, and immigration in a big talk to the National Press Club.

In the previous 15 years, according to Ms. O'Neil, the number of unskilled migrants doubled to 800,000, while temporary skilled migrants increased the total figure near to one million.

She stated that fundamental changes were required to let more talented permanent immigrants into the country in order to advance industry, research, and technology.

"This is not a dog whistle. I am arguing here in favour of immigration, strongly. And this is not about race - I'm not making any comment about where migrants come from,"Ms O'Neil remarked.

"I'm saying that we need to make an economic transformation in our country, and that immigration can help us do it - but it's not going to happen if we just go back to the way things were before."

Work must be the focal point of debate, Ms. O'Neil argued, in light of Labor's ongoing disputes over policy direction.

She emphasized the importance of addressing poor wage growth, living standards, the gig economy, and underpayments.

"It's time for us - as a legislature and a population - to pause and question why we've allowed labor conditions to degenerate to this degree."

The lecture was based on concepts from Ms. O'Neil's podcast, in which she interviewed over sixty prominent political, economic, and intellectual leaders.

The Victorian member of parliament from the right group stated that Australia should continue to influence international institutions while balancing the advantages of globalisation with national autonomy.

"While an interconnected world is in Australia's interests, we need to be smart," she said.

"It means taking a sober look at our capabilities and asking what we might need to be able to do for ourselves, should another crisis hit."

She stated that politicians should compete for voters rather than with one another.

Ms. O'Neil stated, "Enough with the hostility and arrogant exchanges, with the phony astonishment and fake fury."

"Enough with the culture's machismo, which conflates stubbornness and refusal to listen and adapt with strength."

Ms. O'Neil, who was considered for the position of deputy Labor leader after the election but withdrew, criticized the notion that every member of parliament aspires to the party's top position.

She stated, "I'm not interested in politics to play chess."

"Promotions don't excite me if I don't know what to do with the higher amount of authority that comes with them."

Tanya Plibersek, a Labor front-bencher, also delivered a speech on Wednesday in which she advocated for guaranteed funding for science and research to support job-creating innovation.

She criticized the Morrison administration for declining to reprimand Liberal MP Craig Kelly for supporting an unproven coronavirus treatment.
