Top executives told a business summit that Australia needs to reform its immigration laws to attract more individuals to relocate to the nation and assist fix a chronic labour deficit, as well as boost workplace diversity.

"Migration plays an important role in helping us identify people with experience we haven't had time to gain." "I believe that is vital," said Kate Pounder, CEO of the Australian Technology Council. On Tuesday, she spoke at the Australian Financial Review Business Summit.

Women make up half of the employees that come to the IT sector via skilled migration, according to Pounder. "However, if you look at our training system, 90 percent of those who graduate with a bachelor's degree in computer and communication technology are males." As a result, migration helps in improving gender balance," she remarked.

Prior to the pandemic, Australia hired around 400,000 international students and 250,000 working holidaymakers each year, many of whom worked in bars, hotels, and restaurants. As the virus spread, the government locked its borders and requested temporary immigrants to leave, diminishing the supply.

Last month, Australia reopened its international borders. However, analysts predict that migration will take some time to revert to pre-pandemic levels, creating a labour shortage as job openings grow.

The government has to reform visa requirements to make it simpler for overseas students and migrants to become permanent citizens, according to Preeti Bajaj, CEO of talent recruiting firm Adecco Group ANZ. Prior to the pandemic, Australian politicians made it more difficult to get permanent residency and citizenship, making it less appealing to relocate to the country.

"I suppose I might say that time is of the essence. It's a basic policy setting; we know where the population is coming from, we have a scarcity, and we can be deliberate about it and just speed up the visa process," Bajaj explained.

"You can't expand your company if you don't have talent and aren't mobilising it from the education system and throughout the world."
