The Government of Canada is planning to welcome a total of 1,233,000 new eligible and skilled permanent residents in the span of next three years with a vision to use the immigration as a resource and fuel to recover the economic capability of Canada that has took place due to the impact of CVID-19 and also for restoring the negative fiscal impacts that is mainly due to the aging population and low birth rate prevalent within the population of Canada.

These figures were released by the Minister of Immigration of Canada, Honorable Marco Mendicino on October 30, 2020 through the Canada’s Immigration Level Plans for the year 2021-2023.

Canada is targeting great numbers of immigrants – which is even more than 400,000 new permanent residents each year, simultaneously fighting the impacts of coronavirus pandemic.

These targets being announced by the federal government of Canada for the potential immigrants may seem to be ambitious and at the same time challenging for a country that is facing high level of unemployment in between the ongoing pandemic situation, but the big immigration targets are in certain alignment with the future-oriented approach planned by the officials for the economic growth of the country.

For the past many years now, Canada has been inviting thousands of new permanent residents every year and a great number of these new immigrants are coming from skilled economic pathway which is curated for workers. Canada’s high aim for the immigration is also a plausible effort made to combat the aging population. As the population of the country ages, a large number of young populations of tax payers would be required to offset the financial costs directed towards taking care of the senior citizens in the community.

Due to these evident reasons, it is of no surprise that Canada continues to welcome skilled immigrants through its ambitious immigration targets amidst the global pandemic, as those operating the policies and procedures are not only looking at where we will be next year or even five years from today but instead decades in the future.

Four important takeaways from the new Canada Immigration Level Plan

There are some relevant takeaways from the immigration level plans announced by Canada and are described as follows:   1) The new immigration plan is the most ambitious in the history of Canada   Not after the year 1913, when the government of Canada welcomes approximately 401,000 new immigrants, the country has not crossed the threshold of 40,000 immigrants. However, Canada is all set to cross this threshold in the current and also in the upcoming years.   Immigrant representatives, advocates and also all hopeful and potential immigrants were waiting for an update to be received from the government of Canada if the impact of pandemic would eventually lead to reduction on the levels of Canadian immigration, however this has not happened. On the contrary to these predictions, Canada has resolved to welcome more than 1,233,000 new permanent immigrants in the coming three years of time. In addition to the same, these numbers are with respect to only new skilled permanent residents along with other great number of temporary residents residing within the country and include students, workers, visitors that will also be welcomed to Canada as long-term residents of the country to meet the given targets for immigration to Canada.   2) The majority of these new permanent residents will be welcomed through the economic pathways   Approximately, 60 percent of the new permanent residents will come via the economic immigration stream which prioritizes professional and skilled workers and also their families. This is followed by the immigration policies of Canada from the past several years. A great number of 100,000 of these skilled workers and immigrants reach Canada as migrants each year through one of the most popular immigration streams of Canada, that is, Express Entry System, which is in itself is a record high target, with further 80,000 immigrants coming from the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) pathway that allows the provinces and territories across Canada to nominate and invite new immigrants who meet the eligibility criteria of their economic and demographic needs and requirements.   3) Targets for the family sponsorship immigration levels have also increased   Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada often are able to sponsor their family members, which mainly includes their spouse, common-law partner and also dependent children towards the permanent immigration to Canada. Family reunification has always been a priority task under the immigration policy of Canada, therefore it’s of no surprise to see the targets been set by the government of Canada as high as 80,000 for the yearly admissions for this immigration category.   However, it needs to be noted that, under the newly announced immigration level plans, there has been a gradual increase in the targets for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents. The government has most recently released its goal to welcome as high as 30,000 new applications via the Parent and Grandparent immigration program (PGP) in the year 2021, which is yet another record figure that will allow the admissions of approximately 24,000 immigrants yearly over the span of upcoming three years.   4) Higher immigration targets for the refugee and asylum seekers   Canada has doubled its reputation on the global front towards providing citizenship to the refugees and the asylum seekers in relatively great numbers when compared to other developed nations. The 2021-2023 Immigration Level Plans of Canada has mentioned inviting approximately 60,000 such individuals for them to grant the status of permanent residents on an annual basis, which is again a record high target being perceived for the modern times. Under these migrants, one-third of the refugees admitted will be sponsored privately, by the similar community of protected persons within Canada and also their family members that will be eventually granted permanent resident status. Most of the remaining such individuals will be sponsored by the government.   Overall, the 2021-2023 Canada Immigration Level Plans can be perceived as an optimistic and ambitious project and therefore now is the right time to start your Express Entry Application for Immigration to Canada to target your spot as a permanent resident of Canada.
