IRCC employs a system called Express Entry to manage economic immigration applications for the following three programs:
- The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- General
- Program-specific
- Category-based
The distinctions between these draw types will be explained below.
General and program-specific Express Entry draws prioritize immigration candidates mainly based on their CRS scores.
(Note: CRS scores are numerical values assigned to eligible Express Entry candidates based on various human capital factors such as age, work experience, and official language proficiency.)For candidates aiming to receive an ITA through these draw types, the following steps outline the process from deciding to pursue an Express Entry ITA to receiving one from IRCC:
- Confirm your eligibility for at least one Express Entry-managed program (FSWP, FSTP, or CEC).
- Create an IRCC profile online and obtain your CRS score.
- Await the next Express Entry draw to see if you receive an ITA.
ITAs are issued only to candidates whose CRS scores exceed the department's cut-off score for that particular draw.

What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an application management system that manages three key economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.Candidates in these programs are assessed and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System, which assigns scores based on factors such as occupation, work experience, age, education, and language ability. Additional points are awarded for factors like immigrating with a spouse or partner or having a sibling in Canada.
