As we know, a Designated Area Migration Agreement or DAMA is an agreement-based framework which provides flexibility for states, territories or regions to respond to their unique economic and labor market conditions.   This Designated Area Migration Agreement was first assigned to the Northern Territory of Australia. Northern Territory Designated Area Migration Agreement or popularly known as NT DAMA is an employer-sponsored visa program which comes under the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (Subclass 482 labor agreement stream). To avail this visa, applicants should look for a job with a Northern Territory employer who can sponsor them.

Benefits of D.A.M.A:

  • The D.A.M.A agreement is a pathway to the PR visa. There will be a broader range of occupations available for work visa sponsorship.
  • English language concessions for some immigrants
  • Salary concessions that in some aspects
  • No conditions applied for a wider range of occupations
  • A five-year agreement to minimize red tape
  • Range of risk integrity actions to ensure the rights of both employees & employer

How to apply for the D.A.M.A Australia?

There are several steps in the DAMA process:
  1. Your business needs to apply to the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation for endorsement.
  2. Secondly, if your business is eligible to access NT DAMA, a letter of endorsement and copies of the supporting documents will be sent to the Australian Government and your business.
The designated area migration agreement (D.A.M.A) programme has been specifically designed by keeping mind to boost the workforce policies of territories, states, and regions, to promote economic performance.  This migration system, in turn, helps to adjust to the varying economic conditions of these regions.

The D.A.M.A is a two-stage contract:

  • The first step of the process comprises of an overarching 05-year record of agreement with a selected area representative setting out professions, concessions and ceilings
  • The second stage involves individual labor contracts directly with the companies.
For an easy grant of the D.A.M.A, both the phases need to be completed. This system of migration has been built with collaborative systems. Within the Government of Australia and state or regional and territory authorities, there have been roles distributed and responsibilities assigned.   The standard program of subclass 482 visa does not allow for access to a wider range of workers in abroad. The DAMA system is more streamlines & its nature enables organizations for a better approach for selection of workers. They can access without the requirement to personally negotiate terms and conditions. DAMAs are targeting small companies which may even not have proper resources to produce labor contracts directly with the government.   By introducing the D.A.M.A in Western Australia, the government has started an initiative of regularising the equal distribution of labor workers in all regions & not stagnating only one area. This way skilled worker class will be able to get introduced to many other regions of Australia.
