Invitation rounds for skilled migration visas are held periodically throughout the program year in Australia. These rounds invite eligible applicants to apply for their visas based on their Expression of Interest (EOI). The main visa subclasses included in these rounds are:
- Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored
The number of invitations issued in each round can vary depending on the volume of applications at the time. It’s important to note that state or territory government nominations for skilled visas are not affected by these invitation rounds.

Occupation Ceilings
An occupation ceiling refers to a cap on the number of EOIs invited from specific occupation groups. This system ensures that the skilled migration program aligns with Australian Government priorities and helps maintain a diverse and balanced range of skilled occupations within the country.
However, occupation ceilings do not apply to the following visa subclasses:
- Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – State and Territory Nominated
Invitation Process
Invitations are issued based on the points score of each EOI. EOIs with the highest points scores are invited first. If multiple EOIs have the same score, the tie is broken by the date of effect—the date and time the EOI reached its score. The EOI with the earliest date of effect is invited before those with later dates.
