Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released 1,391 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the latest Express Entry draw, focusing exclusively on the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Candidates required a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 670 to receive an invitation.

This draw marks the first of the week and is the fifth Express Entry draw conducted in July. On July 8, IRCC invited 3,200 candidates in a category-based draw for French proficiency. Earlier, on July 2, another PNP-only draw took place, issuing 920 invitations to candidates with a CRS score of 739.

PNP-only draws typically have higher CRS score requirements because nominated candidates receive an additional 600 CRS points. For instance, an Express Entry candidate with a score of 300 would see their score rise to 900 upon successful nomination.

Understanding Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada's system for managing applications for three economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). It uses the CRS to evaluate candidates based on factors like occupation, age, education, language skills, and work experience. The total score determines a candidate’s rank.

Introduced in 2015, Express Entry aims to expedite processing times for successful applicants, with a standard processing time of six months.

Category-Based Selection

Launched in 2023, category-based selection targets Express Entry candidates likely to address workforce gaps or enhance demographics. The six categories, set to remain until 2025, include:

  1. Healthcare occupations
  2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  3. Trades occupations (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, contractors)
  4. Transport occupations
  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  6. French-language proficiency
  7. These draws are not program-specific, and applicants must meet the eligibility requirements within the Express Entry pool.
