The Morrison Government has laid down new requirements especially for the partner visa applicants and also for their permanent resident sponsors in order for them to make considerable efforts to learn and have a good grasp on their English language skills.
English has been taken as a national language by the Australian continent and is important for securing jobs and also critical for completely participating in the government’s democracy and also for the social cohesion.
The statistics further reveal that only 13 percent of the individuals that are have no English skills are employed as compared to 62 percent of those individuals who can communicate fluently in the English language.
The Australian Government is well aware about the fact that without sufficient level of English language knowledge and skills, the immigrant workers and residents are vulnerable to the incidences such as family violence and also similar or other exploitations as they have little awareness on where and how to seek the required assistance.
In the past decade, the total number of people that are living and working in Australia and are not speaking English to a considerable level or not able to understand the language completely has increased significantly and is reaching to up to a million people. Moreover, half of these people belong to a group of working individuals.
In the beginning of this year, the Australia Government announced that their plans to remove any limitations on the migrants to access free classes to learn English language through the government sponsored Adult Migration English Program (AMEP). Migrants can therefore access as many number of hours that they want to reach to achieve the level of vocational English.
Further, as part of this particular week’s budget, the Government of Australia has released new requirements for the applicants of partner visa and also for the permanent resident sponsors to make considerable efforts for them to learn English language. Partner Visas constitutes about 90 percent of the family stream visas of the total permanent migration intake. The skilled stream however aready has the requirement to show English language requirements.
From the late 2021, all the new partner visa applicants as well as the permanent resident sponsors will be mandated to demonstrate functional level of English or to show that they have made considerable efforts towards learning the language.
Individuals will be able to demonstrate the same through, for instance, by competing 500 hours of free English language classes offered by the AMEP.
Most partner visas are equivalent to provisional visas of two years before they would become eligible for the permanent visa. The required eligibility will be required to be met during the time of granting of the permanent visa.
It is also important to note that the ability and skill to speak in multiple language is in itself a great asses for a person and also for the Australia as whole, as a person will struggle to integrate completely in our society and democratic decisions without the knowledge of basic English.
The newly announced measures will provide ample opportunities to the foreign migrants and also to the new citizens to increase their opportunities in Australia.
More in-depth details regarding these measures will be made available for the public in the forthcoming months.
