April 23, 2021
Immigration Minister of Australia, Alex Hawke has confirmed the implementation of a well-managed skilled migration program will support the immigration planning levels for the year 2021-22 with a strong intention to complete the critical gaps in the skill requirement to support the enterprises in the regional cities and areas across Australia, as the country is still emerging from the financial consequences of COVID-19
Alex Hawke said migration is certainly an important aspect for recovering the economy of the Australia caused due to the pandemic. The minister of immigration to Australia confirmed the same in a live session hosted by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), which is an independent organization on April 20.
The immigration minister further confirmed that skilled migration will be encouraged to support the requirements of the growing industries and businesses across Australia and also to take care of the skills shortages and promote the jobs within the critical sectors to help in the economic recovery of the nation.
Immigration and Australia’s economic recovery plan
The government of Australia perceives immigrations pathways as an integral part of the ways by which Australia will recover from the impact of COVID and also sees the migration programs as an opportunity to access more skills from the professional workers that are in demand by the nation. Therefore, the shortages in the skills that the country would face as it will recover from the effect of the pandemic; will be on high priority for the immigration programs in the upcoming years.
In the recent years, immigration has been tracked as a prominent cause for the increase in the overall population of Australia and has led to an accelerated rate of population in the nation over the past decades. However, Net Overseas Migration (NOM) is although expected to be negative until the year 2023, based on the prediction released by the government. But as the international borders for the country would remain closed, the situation can become more critical for the economy of Australia that greatly relies upon the migration from foreign countries.
Skilled migration integral to Australian economy
The Australian government, since the pandemic situation is debating upon the migration planning levels for the year 2021-2022 and the positive role that migrants can play in helping to recover the economy of the country. The chief executive officer of CEDA, Melinda Cilento confirmed that skilled migration has always been and will always be an integral part of the Australian economy and therefore also for the post-pandemic recovery procedures in Australia.
Since last 70 years, Australia has issued permanent residency status to over 7 million migrants and 2 million were confirmed in the last decade, which particularly includes a large quota of skilled migrants. With Australian borders closed currently and with the financial recovery in process for the nation, the government is keeping a stringent track on the increasing requirement of various skills at work and therefore the job ads are highest in the last 20 years.
Therefore, a considerable hope is on the government that should be responding to these trends by bringing more flexibility to the migration programs and makes it easier for the businesses to get more skills that they require from the migrant work force.
Migration policies to be more flexible and responsive than before
Mr. Hawke confirmed that the federal government recognizes the various challenges faced by the individuals in the country due to the restrictions posed by the pandemic and the impact that the COVID has made on the groups of skilled and economic migrants, which includes the international students, temporary visa holders and the tourist as they contributed greatly towards the nation’s economy. Minister Hawke has assured that the immigration policies would be certainly more flexible than before in the coming post-pandemic times.
He also confirmed that a range of temporary changes have been made in the multiple visa criteria and the eligibility requirements of the same, and similar updates will be announced along with changes in the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) that at the present moment identifies only 18 occupations that complete the critical skills needs to improve the economic deficits of the pandemic.
Melbourne based immigration agent also projected that there are high possibilities that for the upcoming financial year, more priority would be given to the points-based skilled migration visas for those occupations that fall under the critical skills sector only. Further, it is highly likely that there will be little change in the total number of invites that will be issued in a time period of a quarter for the next financial year.
