Skilled Visa: New Occupations Included to Apply for ACT Nomination
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) offers nomination to the applicants under the following two skilled migration streams: • Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 Visa • Skilled Nominated (Permanent) Subclass 190 Visa
Prior to applying towards the ACT nomination, you would be required to complete the Home Affairs Skill Select (Expression of Interest) and should also meet the points test created by the Department of Home Affairs (which is currently equivalent to 65 Points).
Two Stage Process to apply for the ACT Nomination: 1. You should officially express an interest while applying for the ACT nomination. This would be done by submitting a completed score-based “Canberra Matrix” where you will be awarded points based on the demonstrated economic benefits or contribution along with a genuine commitment for becoming a member of the ACT community (Optional). You can either select ACT 491 nomination or could select ACT 190 nomination. The candidates who would then be able to get highest ranks under each stream will then be sent an invitation to apply after their selection for ACT nomination.
2. If you are being issued an invitation to apply towards the ACT nomination, you should complete and submit the online application (and also pay the service fee) within a period of 14 days. You should also attach the needed documents to give evidence for your eligibility and Matrix score that has been claimed during the time of Matrix submission. In case you don’t meet the required eligibility criteria, or you are not able to provide necessary evidence required to validate the claimed matrix score on which your application is based upon, then your application for ACT 190 nomination will fail to meet the aimed nomination criteria.
You should also read the guidelines for the ACT nomination to confirm your eligibility and to complete the mandated Canberra Matrix for ACT 190/491 nominations. If you are issued an invitation to apply (ITA) for ACT nomination, then you would be required to provide evidence towards nomination eligibility along with all Matrix points that are being claimed by you at the date on which the Matrix has been submitted.
ACT Occupation List
The newly updated ACT Occupation List will be applicable across all Matrix that are submitted either on or after 1 January, 2020. The new occupations that will get opened includes:
• Engineers: Engineering manager, industrial, mechanical, production, electronic and electronic • Construction Project Manager • Public Relations Manager • Physicist (with caveat) • Counselors: career, family, drug and school • Natural and physical science professionals nec (with caveat)
In addition to this, two occupations will now be closed. This includes: Early Childhood Teacher and Urban and Regional Planner
Note: 1. Occupation Caveats: The caveats described below apply only to certain occupations that are “open” on the ACT Occupation List. If you intend to nominate an “open” nomination but you do not comply with any of the listed “caveat”, then the occupation would be deemed to be closed. Further, if your application is closed or if it is deemed to be closed, then you or your spouse or partner cannot claim Matrix points applicable for an “open” occupation under a category.
2. *Employment Caveat: At least one year of ACT employment contract under a nominated occupation:
• with an Australian medium to large industry (that has more than 50 employees) that are located in the ACT; or • an appointment over an academic position at an institution located in the ACT territory.
