Youth Mobility Scheme for Indian Nationals set to open on 1 January 2022
From 1st January 2022, the ‘Youth Mobility Scheme’ visa will be available to Indian nationals.
The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) allows people aged 18 to 30 from selected nations to come to the UK for a two-year period. Successful applicants are not required to have a UK employer sponsor their visa and can work in any field (apart from professional sportsperson or coach). They can also work for themselves in the UK, but only under specified conditions.
The list of participating nations in the Youth Mobility Scheme will be expanded to include Indian and Icelandic nationals beginning January 1, 2022.
The YMS plan will allocate 3000 spots to India, and individuals who apply through this way will be subject to a ballot process.
This visa is only available to persons between the ages of 18 and 30, who do not have any children under the age of 18 who are either living with or financially dependent on the applicant. Applicants must have £2,350 in cash on hand for a period of 28 days, as described in Appendix Finance.
Each person is allowed to submit one ballot. The ballots normally open in January and July of each year, and registration is limited to 48 hours. Anyone interested in applying must move immediately to ensure that their interest is registered in accordance with the ballot rules.
The great majority of spots are awarded in January, with any leftover spots awarded in July.
In practise, eligible Indian nationals will have 48 hours to submit an "expression of interest" to the Home Office. The Home Office will then choose 3,000 people at random (by ballot) to be asked to apply for a visa under the Youth Mobility Scheme.
The applicant must be residing outside of the United Kingdom at the time of application; applications cannot be submitted while in the nation.
Additional requirements for India
In addition to the above conditions, there are other eligibility requirements for Indian nationals applying for the YMS visa. To qualify to apply, they will need to provide evidence that they:
- Hold a qualification equal to RQF Level 6 or above (i.e. equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree or above) OR
- Have at least three years’ work experience in a professional role (i.e. (in occupations listed in Appendix Skilled Occupations )
