Web Designers plan, design, develop and prepares information for internet publication with particular emphasis on the user interface, ease of navigation and location of information using text, pictures, animation, sound, colours, layout, and data sources to deliver information tailored to an intended audience and purpose.

Skill Level

Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.

Skills Assessment authority for Web Designer is Vocational Education & Training Assessment (VETASSESS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

• AQF Bachelor Degree or higher in a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
• AQF Bachelor Degree or higher with an additional qualification at least AQF Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study AND at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
• AQF Bachelor Degree or higher without a highly relevant field of study AND at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.
• A highly relevant field of study is a course that has a major focus on web design including the following subjects: web development, web design, server management, creative content, graphic design, information technology, HTML and content management
• To achieve a positive skills assessment, the applicant must meet the qualification and employment experience requirements.

Important

According to VETASSESS, pre-qualification experience for Web Designers may be considered in a skills assessment if the experience meets the following requirements:

• Five years of highly relevant employment; and

One year of highly relevant employment performed at the required skill level in the last five years

Design information for visual and audio communication, publication and display using print, film, electronic, digital and other forms of visual and audio media.

Tasks

• Determining the objectives and constraints of the design brief by consulting with clients and stakeholders
• Undertaking research and analysing functional communication requirements
• Formulating design concepts for the subject to be communicated
• Preparing sketches, diagrams, illustrations and layouts to communicate design concepts
• Negotiating design solutions with clients, management, sales and production staff
• Selecting, specifying or recommending functional and aesthetic materials and media for publication, delivery or display
• Detailing and documenting the selected design for production
• Supervising or carrying out production in the chosen media
• May archive information for future client use

Skill Level

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
