Skills Assessment authority for Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages is Vocational Education and Training Assessment (VETASSESS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

• Qualification assessed at Australian Bachelor degree or higher in a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; OR
• Qualification assessed at an Australian Bachelor Degree or higher in any field of study PLUS an additional suitable TESOL qualification, at least at AQF Certificate IV level which contains TESOL as a method AND at least three years of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level within the last five years in the nominated occupation.
• Applicants must meet both the qualification and employment requirements to obtain a positive skills assessment
• According to VETASSESS, pre-qualification employment is not eligible for consideration for this occupation category
• Highly relevant fields of study include TESOL, English as a Second/Additional Language Teaching
• It should be noted that some other studies in Applied Linguistics may be considered adequate on a case-by-case basis including Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, and Conversation Analysis

• Assessing the extent of language difficulties in students for whom English is a second language
• Teaching students individually and in small groups out of the regular classroom, and assisting students within normal classroom settings
• Teaching students English language skills using a variety of methods including lecture and visual demonstration
• Providing assistance to other classroom teachers by designing special teaching programs for students with English language difficulties
• Designing and producing teaching materials and adapting existing materials
• Preparing course outlines and goals
• Assigning lessons, correcting homework, and preparing and grading exams
• Analysing, recording and reporting progress to regular classroom teachers, parents and students
