Skills Assessment Requirements

Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.

Skills Assessment authority for Orthotist or Prosthetist is Australasian Orthotic Prosthetic Association (AOPA). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • There are two stages involved in the AOPA Skills Assessment process:
    • Stage 1 – Desktop Review
    • Stage 2 – Portfolio of Evidence
  • Stage 1 – Desktop Review
    • Qualification – Applicants must have a dual prosthetics and orthotics qualification that is equivalent to AQF level 7
    • English Language Proficiency – Applicants must score a minimum of 7 in each component of the IETLS test
    • Professional Registration/Recognition – Applicants must demonstrate unrestricted registration/license to practice in the country in which they have received their qualification, the country they are currently practicing in or any other country that they have conducted their practice in
    • Recency of Practice Requirements – Applicants must demonstrate they have completed 1000 hours of practice over the last 5 years by submitting their CV
  • Stage 2 – Portfolio of Evidence
    • This portfolio is used to establish an applicant’s competence in relation to the AOPA Entry Level Competency Standards 2014
    • Applicants can draw on all relevant clinical experience including current employment setting, previous clinical placements, and professional development
