Understanding Express Entry Programs

Canada’s Express Entry system manages applications under three major economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Since June 2023, IRCC has conducted three different types of Express Entry draws, including general draws, program-specific draws, and category-based draws. The June 23 draw was exclusively for candidates in the Canadian Experience Class.

How CRS Scores Work

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to rank Express Entry candidates based on several factors, including:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Language proficiency
  • Skilled work experience
  • Canadian work experience
  • Additional points for job offers, provincial nominations, or eligible family members in Canada

Candidates with higher CRS scores have a stronger chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Steps to Receive an ITA

If you want to apply through Express Entry, follow these steps:

  1. Check your eligibility under FSWP, FSTP, or CEC.
  2. Create your Express Entry profile.
  3. Receive your CRS score.
  4. Wait for an Express Entry draw.
  5. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) if your score meets the required cut-off.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system for skilled immigration. It helps IRCC select qualified candidates for permanent residence based on their CRS scores and labour market requirements.

The system enables Canada to invite skilled professionals who can contribute to the country’s economic growth while ensuring a transparent and efficient immigration process.
