What is the LMIA process and how does it affect my work visa?

Canada FAQs

The LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to verify that hiring a foreign worker won't negatively affect the local job market. Canadian employers must submit an LMIA request before offering a job to a foreign applicant. Once approved, it enables you to apply for a work permit. The LMIA confirms the employer's need for your skills, job details, and wage standards. A positive LMIA strengthens your application significantly and even awards 50-200 CRS points if you later apply for PR through Express Entry. However, not all jobs require LMIA - for example, intra-company transfers or open work permits under international agreements are exempt.
